HIV Follow-up Protocol
In all cases of exposure:
- source should have HIV serology (antibodies to HIV) done ASAP (rapid HIV test where available)
- recipient should have baseline HIV serology done ASAP
SOURCE | RECIPIENT |
---|---|
If source test is negative for HIV antibodies and there are no risk factors for acute HIV identified |
Consider HIV serology in 6 months |
If source test is negative for HIV antibodies BUT acute HIV seroconversion illness (“window period”) is strongly suspected |
HIV serology at baseline, 1, 3, and 6 months URGENT SPECIALIST CONSULTATION regarding consideration for HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) |
If source HIV status unknown and low risk |
Repeat HIV serology in 1, 3, and 6 months Generally, no HIV PEP warranted |
If source HIV status unknown and high risk |
Repeat HIV serology in 1, 3, and 6 months URGENT SPECIALIST CONSULTATION regarding consideration for HIV PEP with significant exposures |
If source HIV positive |
Repeat HIV serology in 1, 3, and 6 months URGENT SPECIALIST CONSULTATION regarding HIV PEP |
