Neisseria spp (animal origin)

  • N. animalis
  • N. animaloris 
  • N. weaveri
  • N. zoodegmatis 

Gram Stain

  • Gram negative diplococci - (except N. weaveri- bacilli) (aerobic)

Clinical Significance

These organisms are part of the normal oral flora of dogs and cats. They have been associated with wound infections following cat and dog bites.

Systemic infections are rare and include bacteremia and endophthalmitis.

 

Usual Susceptibility Pattern

These organisms are susceptible to amoxicillin-clavulanate, 3rd generation cephalosporins, tetracyclines, TMP/SMX, and quinolones.

Susceptibility to narrow spectrum penicillins, cephalosporins, and aminoglycosides is variable.

 

Empiric Therapy
Amoxicillin-clavulanate
Systemic Infection:
Ceftriaxone
or
Ciprofloxacin
