Methylobacterium spp

Gram Stain

  • Gram negative / Gram variable pleomorphic bacilli - nonfermenter (aerobic)

Clinical Significance

These organisms are found in a variety of environmental sources, mostly on vegetation but also in hospital environments.

They are considered low level pathogens but have rarely been associated with nosocomial infections including septicemia, bacteremia, CAPD peritonitis, wound and joint infections, usually in immunocompromised patients.

Tap water has occasionally been implicated in transmission.

Usual Susceptibility Pattern

These organisms are usually susceptible to aminoglycosides, quinolones, and TMP/SMX.

Susceptibility to beta-lactams is variable including to 3rd generation cephalosporins.
