Clinical Significance

This organism is found in the environment and is considered a saprophyte of skin and mucous membranes.

It is of low virulence and can rarely cause opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients especially those with hematological malignancies.

 

Usual Susceptibility Pattern

N. massiliensis is susceptible to ampicillin, imipenem, rifampin, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, doxycycline, and vancomycin, and resistant to TMP/SMX.

 

Empiric Therapy
Penicillin/Ampicillin
For medical device related infections, add:
Rifampin
+/-
Gentamicin
