Potential Effect on Fetus

  • Hepatitis
  • Cirrhosis and/or liver cancer (as an adult)

Rate of Perinatal Transmission

   Untreated:

  • 5-20% if HBeAg negative mother
  • 70-90% if HBeAg positive mother
  • Transmission usually at time of delivery

   Treated:

  • If HBIG and HBV vaccine given 24h after birth – 5-15%

Maternal Screening

- Routine HbsAg (performed in 1st trimester).

Prevention

- HBIG (Hepatitis B immune globulin) and HBV vaccine should be given to baby within 12h of birth.

- If non-immune mother exposed in pregnancy give HBIG and HBV vaccine.

- If high risk non-immune mother, vaccinate in pregnancy.
