Medical device-associated meningitis/ventriculitis
Duration: See organism-specific recommendations. In addition, if repeatedly positive CSF cultures despite appropriate antimicrobial therapy, continue treatment for 10-14 days after last positive culture.
- H. influenzae
- S. pneumoniae
- S. aureus – Add rifampin if isolate is susceptible and prosthetic material (e.g. CSF shunt or drain) still in place. Treat for 10-14 days.
- S. epidermidis – Add rifampin if isolate is susceptible and prosthetic material (e.g. CSF shunt or drain) still in place. Treat for 10 days if no or minimal CSF pleocytosis, normal CSF glucose, and few clinical symptoms or systemic features. Treat for 10-14 days if significant CSF pleocytosis, low CSF glucose, or clinical symptoms or systemic features.
- E. coli, Klebsiella spp, or Salmonella spp
- Enterobacter spp, Citrobacter freundii complex, Serratia marcescens, Providencia spp, Morganella spp, or ceftriaxone-resistant Enterobacterales
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Acinetobacter baumannii
