- Gram positive cocci elongated (no capsule) (aerobic)
Clinical Significance
This organism is part of S. mitis group and closely related to S. pneumoniae and can exhibit similar pathogenicity in the respiratory tract of patients with chronic lung disease.
Usual Susceptibility Pattern
Most isolates should be susceptible to amoxicillin and ceftriaxone. Susceptibility to clindamycin, macrolides, and TMP/SMX is variable.
