Gram Stain
- Gram positive cocci/bacilli (aerobic)
Clinical Significance
These organisms are found in soil environments.
They are opportunistic pathogens implicated in medical device related infections and in patients with immunosuppression. Medical device related infections are difficult to treat with antibiotics alone and typically require device removal.
They have been associated with endocarditis, pneumonia, endophthalmitis, peritonitis, meningitis, wound and urinary tract infections.
Usual Susceptibility Pattern
These organisms are usually susceptible to penicillin (rare resistance reported), imipenem, and vancomycin.
