Gram Stain

• Gram negative straight/slightly curved bacilli - nonfermenter (aerobic)

Clinical Significance

These organisms have a worldwide distribution and are found in water, soil, and on plants including fruit and vegetables.

They have been recovered from respiratory specimens of patients with cystic fibrosis, chronic granulomatous disease and underlying chronic lung diseases where they appear to be pathogenic.

They have rarely been associated with bacteremia and septicemia in immunocompromised patients.

Usual Susceptibility Pattern

These organisms are resistant to aminoglycosides, penicillins, cephalosporins, ertapenem, and meropenem (they often remain susceptible to imipenem).

Susceptibility to quinolones, TMP/SMX, and tetracyclines is variable.
