Clinical Significance
These organisms are found in the environment including foods and water.
They have been associated with respiratory tract infections, wound infections, peritonitis, conjunctivitis, septic arthritis and osteomyelitis, and bacteremia/sepsis in hospitalized patients.
Usual Susceptibility Pattern
These organisms produce a chromosomal extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) and should be considered resistant to all penicillins and cephalosporins.
