Intrathecal and Intraventricular administration

• These modes of administration are seldom necessary given the systemic antimicrobials currently available.
• Concomitant systemic therapy recommended whenever possible.
• Intrathecal administration is unlikely to provide therapeutic concentrations in the ventricles due to the unidirectional flow of CSF. Intraventricular administration is preferred for this reason; however, this mode of administration requires the placement of an Ommaya or Rickham reservoir.
