Clinical Significance
These organisms colonize plants and are considered environmental organisms.
One case of urinary tract infection has been attributed to Erwinia spp.
Usual Susceptibility Pattern
These organisms produce a chromosomal extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) and are usually resistant to ampicillin and 1st/2nd generation cephalosporins.
Third generation cephalosporins may have reduced activity.
They have variable resistance to aminoglycosides.
