Acidovorax spp

Gram Stain

  • Gram negative bacilli straight/slightly curved - nonfermenter (aerobic)

Clinical Significance

These organisms have been isolated from a variety of environmental sources (soil/water) and are thought to primarily be plant pathogens.

They can also be recovered from respiratory specimens of cystic fibrosis patients and have been associated with bacteremia in patients with hematologic malignancies and medical device related infections.

They are considered low level pathogens.

Usual Susceptibility Pattern

These organisms are usually resistant to aminoglycosides, colistin, narrow spectrum penicillins,  and 1st/2nd generation cephalosporins.

They are usually susceptible to 3rd generation cephalosporins, piperacillin-tazobactam, imipenem, quinolones, tetracyclines, and TMP/SMX.
