Cupriavidus spp

Gram Stain

  • Gram negative straight/slightly curved bacilli - nonfermenter (aerobic)

Clinical Significance

These organisms are found in a variety of sources including soil, water and hospital environments.

They have been associated with bacteremia, meningitis, endocarditis, peritonitis, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, tenosynovitis, and medical device related infections, typically in immunocompromised patients.

They can be recovered from respiratory specimens of patients with cystic fibrosis where their pathogenic role has not been fully established.

Usual Susceptibility Pattern

These organisms are resistant to aminoglycosides and most penicillins and cephalosporins (with exception of anti-pseudomonal beta-lactam agents).

They are usually susceptible to TMP/SMX, quinolones, and carbapenems.

Colistin susceptibility is variable.
