  • Gram positive bacilli - very short, often misinterpreted as cocci (aerobic)

Clinical Significance

This organism is considered a colonizer of human skin. 

It has been associated with bacteremia, endocarditis, CAPD peritonitis, brain abscesses, osteomyelitis, chronic wound infections, and ocular infections, typically in immunocompromised patients.

 

Usual Susceptibility Pattern

These organisms are typically susceptible to vancomycin, linezolid, and rifampin.

They are resistant to macrolides, clindamycin, TMP/SMX, and daptomycin.

Susceptibility to aminoglycosides, penicillin, ceftriaxone, imipenem, tetracyclines, rifampin, and quinolones is variable.

 

Empiric Therapy
Clinically significant infection:
Vancomycin
or
Linezolid
