  • Gram negative coccobacilli small - nonfermenter

Clinical Significance

O. urethralis may be part of the endogenous flora of the urethra. It has rarely been associated with urinary tract infections and septic arthritis.

O. ureolytica is probably more pathogenic and has been associated with urinary tract infections, bacteremia, pneumonia, cellulitis, lymphadenitis, and wound infections.

Usual Susceptibility Pattern

O. urethralis is usually susceptible to most antibiotics including penicillin.

O. ureolytica is also usually quite susceptible but broad spectrum resistance to beta-lactam agents, quinolones, and TMP/SMX has been reported.
