- Gram negative bacilli - fermenter straight, curved or comma shaped (facultative anaerobic)
Clinical Significance
V. cholera causes epidemic and pandemic cholera.
Usual Susceptibility Pattern
Strains from East Africa, Bangladesh, and parts of India have high rates of resistance to tetracycline and TMP/SMX.
This organism is usually susceptible to aminoglycosides, quinolones, azithromycin, 3rd generation cephalosporins, and carbapenems.
