NB: Other multiresistant organisms may be transmitted nosocomially. Consultation with Infection Prevention and Control is recommended.

Body fluids or secretions containing organism; usually feces

Mode of Transmission

Direct contact. Inanimate objects from patient room often harbor organisms.

Gloves Worn upon entry into care room and removed prior to exit. If in direct contact with colonized or infected body fluids/secretions. Perform hand hygiene at all times when leaving patient room.

Duration of Precautions

  • Consult Infectious Diseases regarding clinical management of non-resolving cases.

  • Contact site Infection Prevention and Control for issues regarding precautions, including when precautions may be discontinued. Typically, precautions may be discontinued when the patient is both asymptomatic and able to resume good bowel routine for 48 – 72 hours though some favour prolonged isolation.

  • Routine repeat laboratory testing of stool is NOT necessary.
