Cellulosmicrobium spp
Gram Stain
- Gram positive bacilli small thin (aerobic)
Clinical Significance
These organisms are ubiquitous in the environment and have rarely been implicated in infections including bacteremia, endocarditis, intra-abdominal infection (including CAPD peritonitis), meningitis, septic arthritis, and ophthalmic infections (keratitis. endophthalmitis).
Most infections occur in immunocompromised patients and are medical device related.
Usual Susceptibility Pattern
These organisms are usually susceptible to vancomycin, linezolid, and rifampin.
They are resistant to macrolides.
Note: removal of medical device is typically required to cure infection.
