  • Gram negative bacilli - nonfermenter

Clinical Significance

These organisms are found in the environment and are closely related to Alcaligenes spp. 

They have been associated with bacteremia, chronic otitis media/mastoiditis, and cellulitis (in the setting of chronic ulcers).

 

Usual Susceptibility Pattern

These organisms appear to be susceptible to 3rd generation cephalosporins, piperacillin-tazobactam, carbapenems, TMP/SMX, and aminoglycosides.

Quinolone susceptibility is variable.

They are resistant to colistin.
