Cystitis

- Cystitis is an infection of the lower urinary tract which causes dysuria, with or without frequency, urgency, or suprapubic pain.

- Cystitis is NOT typically associated with fever. If febrile, recommend blood culture and empiric therapy for pyelonephritis.

- In postmenopausal women:

• acute dysuria (<1 week in duration) is the most discriminating clinical symptom for UTI

• new onset of frequency or urgency or recurrent UTI may warrant investigation for structural abnormalities such as bladder diverticula or cystoceles.
